As the title suggests, both homegrown SUVs are technically the same in terms of engine and transmission. But they have different dimensions, and as you may know that the Tata Safari has six and seven-seat configurations. These two are the only Tata cars that are built on the same OmegaArc platform. For your reference, the OmegaArc platform (also called the D8) is a JLR-sourced chassis which underpins the Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Evoque and the Jaguar E-Pace. But Tata Motors has used a revamped version of the JLR D8 platform. Moreover, the Tata Harrier and the Safari recently received the new ‘Red Dark’ edition, which packs loads of features in terms of entertainment, comfort and safety. As far as the price figures go, the Tata Safari’s price is slightly higher than the Tata Harrier’s. There is an approximate difference of Rs 70,000 between their base models. And, it has a price difference of about a lakh between their top models. So, let’s see how the Tata Harrier stacks up against the Tata Safari. Let’s begin, then!  
Dimensions
As mentioned before, the Tata Safari has a three-row layout and offers a six and seven-seat layout. The Safari has a length of 4661mm, a width of 1894mm, and a height of 1786mm, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2741mm. On the other hand, the Tata Harrier has the same dimensions except for the length. You can expect the same amount of legroom in both SUVs, as they both have an identical wheelbase. But, the cabin of the Safari might feel roomier because of its extended overall length.
If you are a buyer who is adventure-oriented and has more than four family members, the Tata Safari should be the pick. In terms of boot space, the Tata Safari has a boot capacity of 73 litres, whereas the Tata Harrier has a boot capacity of 425 litres. Engine, Transmission and other Specifications
As mentioned above, the Tata Harrier has the same engine and transmission as the Tata Safari. Both are powered by a diesel engine and none of these vehicles gets a four-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive system. Further, they are not available in petrol engines. However, the indigenous carmaker sourced the 2.0 diesel engine from FCA (Fiar-Chrysler) group, which also powers the Jeep Compass with the same engine tune. For your reference, two Jeep cars have the same 2.0-litre diesel engine- the Jeep Meridian and the Compass.
Moving on, both indigenous SUVs are powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec turbocharged diesel engine, which churns out 167.67 bhp at 3750 rpm and 350 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. The actual cubic capacity of this engine is 1956cc. In terms of transmissions, both SUVs get a standard six-speed manual gearbox and an optional automatic gearbox. The Safari and the Harrier have a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. As far as fuel efficiency is concerned, the manual version of the Tata Safari has a mileage of 16.14 km/l, while the automatic version has a mileage of 14.08 km/l. On the contrary, the manual version of the Tata Harrier has a mileage of 16.35 km/l, while the automatic version returns a certified mileage of 14.6 km/l. All are ARAI-certified mileage figures. Besides the engine output, the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier have the same suspension setup. Interestingly, both use the retuned suspension setup of the Land Rover Discovery. It has an Independent Lower Wishbone McPherson Strut with Coil Spring and Anti Roll Bar at the front and a Semi-independent Twist Blade with Panhard Rod and Coil Spring at the rear. Both SUVs can provide a comfortable ride quality, especially considering the source of the suspension setup.
Moreover, Tata Motors engineers design their vehicles by keeping the conditions of Indian roads in mind. In short, neither of the SUVs will let you complain about driveability. However, it is always recommended to take a test drive of your dream vehicle, as it helps in a better understanding of the car. Apart from the setup, the Harrier and the Safari have disc brakes on all four wheels. These disc brakes can be visible through 18-inch alloy wheels. Features
In terms of features also, they are the same! There are only two-three features here and there that make them different but they might be overlooked by the customers. The Tata Safari has a bigger touchscreen of 10.4 inches, making it marginally bigger than the Harrier’s 10.24-inch touchscreen. Both have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. They also share the same JBL-sourced audio system, having a total of nine speakers. However, other common features include a wireless charger, connected car technology, cruise control, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, diamond-patterned perforated leather seats with ventilating function, and electrically adjustable seats with memory function. Considering the Harrier’s price, this SUV boasts loads of features.
Both also have drive modes, a digital clock, a leather-wrapped gear selector, a leather-wrapped multi-functional steering wheel, and a centre armrest with storage. They also offer auto HVAC, air quality control, power steering, power windows (all), USB and Auxiliary outlets, a 12V charging socket, comfort access entry, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and rain-sensing wipers with washers. Keeping safety in mind, both have six airbags, auto-dimming IRVM, central locking, child-locks, ABS with EBD, traction control, tyre pressure monitor, engine immobiliser, ESC, rollover mitigation, and auto headlights. Further, they offer hill assist, hill descent control, blind spot monitor, rear camera with sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and ADAS. After the XUV700, which used to be the first-in-segment SUV with ADAS doesn’t have a monopoly anymore. Yes, both the Tata Harrier and the Safari have ADAS. Its features include high-beam assist, autonomous emergency braking (Pedestrian and Cycle), forward and rear collision warning, traffic sign recognition, lane change alert, and lane departure warning. Last but not least, both cars come with a 360-degree view camera.
Prices and Variants
Both homegrown SUVs are offered in six broad trims: XE, XM, XMS, XT+, XZ and XZ+. In addition, the Harrier and the Safari received the recently introduced ‘Dark’ and ‘Red Dark’ editions. The Tata Harrier’s price starts at Rs 15 lakh for the base model, the XE, and goes up to Rs 24.07 lakh for the top model, the XZA+ (O) Red Dark AT. On the other hand, the starting price of the Tata Safari is Rs 15.65 lakh for the base model, the XE, and goes up to Rs 25.02 lakh for the top model, the XZA+ (O) 6 STR Red Dark AT.
